CHAPTER 11

“What are you doing?”

Joe sidled up behind me and peered over my shoulder.

“Looking for a contractor or something for the hole in our roof. Any thoughts?”

“I wonder if I could fix it.”

I looked at him. “You’re kidding, right? Even when you were alive, you didn’t do things like that. And now you think you’re even more qualified? Thanks, but let’s get a pro.”

He laughed and moved around to face me. I smiled and continued my search as Joe continued to watch me.

“Do you need something?” I asked. He was getting on my nerves a little, just sitting there looking at me.

“No. Well, yes. I’d like to talk. Sort of serious stuff.”

That was rare. Joe seldom started a serious conversation, and he looked worried. This would not be good.

I closed the laptop and gave him my full attention.

“What’s up?”

“I have a terrible feeling, Connie. I keep getting these strange sensations, like someone is watching us. And I know I could just be paranoid with Grandmother and the orbs missing and, of course, Beezel. I’m torn between wanting to hide and wanting to go out there and kick some ass to get them all back. I can’t just hang around here and do nothing. That’s not me. But I don’t know what to do to get them back. I don’t know how to help. And I can’t stay locked up in here. It’s driving me crazy. Now that I know I can move around and be proactive. Sitting around here will not work for me.”

I listened and nodded along as he spoke. It didn’t surprise me he was going stir crazy. He was a do-er, and he was smart. Those two traits didn’t lend themselves to just hanging around the house waiting for something to happen while everyone around him was out trying to find Grandmother, Beezel, and the others.

“What do you want to do?”

“I’ve thought about it. I want to help find everyone. I think I’m able to make a difference and actually help in a real way. I want to talk to Orenda, go to her house with you, do more than just listen.”

I didn’t know what that might look like and certainly did not know what Joe might or might not be able to do. I didn’t like it at all.

“Are you sure? I’d rather-,”

He cut me off.

“I know you’d rather I not do anything at all, but this isn’t your call. I may not be living, but I am still an adult and now…,” he hesitated.

“What? What now?”

“I can move around without needing help. I can do it on my own if I have to.”

His words stung.

“No. You don’t have to do it alone. I’ll take you there tonight,” I said.

I focused on my laptop, willing the conversation to be finished before I started crying.

Joe hesitated for a few more seconds. I could feel his eyes on me.

“Thanks,” he said. Then he wandered off, a slight haze trailing behind him.

I was alone, but not for long. Lex wandered in and jumped into the chair beside me.
